1 Kings 12:25-33

1 Kings 12:25 is part of this passage.
25Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived in it; and he went out from there and built Penuel. 26Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will return to David’s house. 27If this people goes up to offer sacrifices in the LORD’s house at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.” 28So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said to them, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Look and behold your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” 29He set the one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan. 30This thing became a sin, for the people went even as far as Dan to worship before the one there. 31He made houses of high places, and made priests from among all the people, who were not of the sons of Levi. 32Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah, and he went up to the altar. He did so in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made, and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made. 33He went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and went up to the altar to burn incense.

Summary

Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived in it; and he went out from there and built Penuel. Harsh pride and golden calves tear the kingdom David unified.

Interpretation

In 1 Kings 12:25-33, Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived in it; and he went out from there and built Penuel The narrator wants us to see the covenant God who grants wisdom, dwells by His Name, and will not share glory with Baal. Listen to the text: “Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived in it; and he went out from there and built Penuel. Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will return to David’s house. If this people goes…”

Rehoboam’s harshness and Jeroboam’s calves tear the kingdom. Political fracture is theological: false worship institutionalizes the break.

Rehoboam’s harsh reply splits the kingdom; Jeroboam made king of Israel; golden calves at Bethel and Dan; false feast and priesthood. In the split and early kings (chs. 12–16), calves, coups, and Omri’s house deepen idolatry. This passage belongs in that movement: 1 Kings 12:25-33 is not an isolated scrap but a step in God’s purpose to claim Israel’s throne and worship. The LORD keeps Davidic promise, weighs kings by covenant fidelity, and raises prophets when thrones bow to idols.

A pastoral word for today: Reject harsh pride and convenient idols; pursue unity under true worship.

Hold temple glory and kingdom fracture, Carmel fire and Horeb whisper together. 1 Kings never flatters Solomon as flawless, yet never cancels God’s claim. That combination is good news for imperfect churches learning holy dependence. Keep 1 Kings 12:25-33 inside that larger faithfulness.

Handle the moral weight of 1 Kings 12:25-33 with humility. Scripture records violence and judgment so that God’s justice and mercy are both clear. Let conviction lead to Christ, who bears judgment that mercy may renew a people under a true King.

As you sit with 1 Kings 12:25-33, ask what it shows about the God who gives wisdom, fills His house, splits pride, and answers idols with truth. 1 Kings is living Scripture that forms exclusive loyalty—not a mere royal chronicle. Let the text steady your confidence in Yahweh’s true kingship.
